Working with the European Parliament to improve the rights of ICT workers in Bangladesh

Tuesday 5 December 2017

On 5 December, UNI Global Deputy General Secretary Christy Hoffman held a positive and constructive meeting with Socialist & Democrat Members of the European Parliament, Linda McAvan (UK) and Agnes Jongerius (the Netherlands), in support of the rights of ICT workers in Bangladesh. The MEPs were shocked and saddened to hear of the systematic violation of these workers’ trade union rights, not only by the Bangladeshi government but also by major European companies such as Telenor, Veon and Ericsson. UNI will work closely with MEPs ahead of a planned EU Parliament delegation to the country early next year to highlight the struggles that trade unionists face and further garner the support of European citizens and trade union members, who will not tolerate these abuses.
