New Year’s Message from UNI Europa

Monday 14 January 2019

Happy New Year from UNI Europa, the European Services Workers Union, and its 268 unions with 7 million members across Europe.

Looking back on 2018 we were successful in putting the demand for a more Social Europe back on the agenda. But it is clear that we have a lot of work to do together in 2019.

With the European elections coming up in May, trade unions need to come together more than ever to fight for a Europe where workers live in freedom from fear and where workers have a real say in the decisions of employers, governments and the EU.

The basis of workers making a difference are strong unions and strong collective bargaining.

Just before Christmas, we celebrated the first sector level agreement for the banking industry in Romania. Congratulations to our affiliate FSAB and the commitment of its members. This win showed how our organising activities, our work towards multinationals and pooling the strengths of our unions across borders can make a difference for workers. It is an encouragement for UNI Europa and its affiliates to push together for collective bargaining everywhere in Europe.

For the next European Parliament and European Commission we want to see not only a social agenda, but social action where workers come first. We need strong EU legislation that makes a difference for workers and gives them good working conditions, good pay and a say at the workplace. We want an EU that promotes rather than undermines sectoral collective bargaining.

Together with all of UNI Europa, we wish our affiliates and those who work with us every success for 2019.
