UNI & ITF increase momentum on organising workers

UNI Global Union and the International Transport Workers Federation have welcomed more than 100 workers and activists from their affiliate unions this week at UNI’s Nyon headquarters for their annual Global Delivery Meeting. The assembled unionists are meeting to discuss the global unions’ joint campaigns in global delivery firms such as DHL, UPS, FedEx, TNT, DPD and Japan Post-Toll.

UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “UNI and the ITF are locked arm-in-arm in our commitment to organize workers and raise standards in global supply chains. Together, we’re working to change the rules of the game for global business. As the ILO and the G7 turn their attention to ensuring decent work across supply chains, it’s essential that our unions keep the pressure on these global delivery companies to ensure that transport, logistics and delivery workers are able to join unions and collectively bargain for good jobs.”

The global delivery unions from both global unions are meeting at a crucial moment in the industry. UNI and ITF are continuing their work with their affiliates to coordinate organizing campaigns across the globe in DHL. FedEx and TNT are in the process of a massive merger that will impact thousands of workers. Japan Post, which celebrated its long-awaited IPO this week, is in the process of integrating the Toll Group which it bought up earlier this year.

Throughout the week, the unions will update others on the progress of their campaigns and set their priorities for the period ahead. “Our work with the ITF and our affiliates is absolutely crucial to the strategy of UNI Post & Logistics,” said department head Stephen DeMatteo. “We’re thrilled to have such a large and active group in town to guide us in raising standards across this growing sector.”
