Building a vibrant community of workers helps build solidarity and maintain a buzz of engagement amongst union members. Unions are increasing using online tools to help build and resource communities of workers.

Centrale Générale of Belgium and Mandate of Ireland will be presenting their approach. Both have decided to structure their communications around the main bargaining unit.

In Belgium, where there is sectoral bargaining, that means around the sectors. Centrale Générale have set up sector webpages as well as sector Facebook pages for security guards, for industrial cleaners and home assistance services amongst others.

In Ireland, where corporate pressure dismantled sectoral bargaining, Mandate trade union has taken a company approach. It has set up specific standalone websites and Facebook pages for workers at key companies, such as Decency for Dunnes Workers and Lloyds Workers.

In both cases, this approach is delivering good levels of worker engagement and is a strategic communications choice. Join us as we hear from fellow communications officers who take us through their approach.

The call will take place on Thursday 16 June at 15:00 to 16:30 CEST (Brussels, Berlin, Paris, Rome time): register here. Thanks to the support of the FES Competence Centre on the Future of Work, we have interpretation into French, Italian and Serbo-Croat.

This is part of UNI Europa’s communications network, which brings together union communicators from across Europe. The idea is to explore communications strategies and tactics that are delivering results in one country in a bid to pool international experiences on which others within the trade union movement can draw.
