COVID-19: travel agency and tour operator workers’ joint statement with employers

As travel and tourism grind to an almost complete standstill, unions have been working with employers to ensure the sector’s resilience to the crisis. Together UNI Europa and ECTAA have published a joint statement outlining both emergency measures needed now and a path to laying the foundations for the sector to bounce back in the aftermath of the crisis.

“There is no doubt people will be in need of a break once this crisis is over and we must ensure the tourism sector is ready to bounce back. It is vital that people are not driven into desperation in this time of need. In the immediate, that means ensuring people continue to get paid. Looking ahead, to ensure the sector is ready for a swift restart we also need people’s jobs are secure so that we avoid the chaos of each person having to scramble to find a job.

“One thing is clear, this unprecedented situation means that the sector needs government intervention. It is encouraging to know that in these times of need, we can work with ECTAA to establish concrete steps. Together we know the sector the best. We will continue playing our part, and we remain committed to supporting the authorities in playing theirs,” said Oliver Roethig, Regional Secretary of UNI Europa.
