Over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-europa.org\/news\/procuringdecentwork-updated-list-of-mep-endorsements\/\">160 Members of the European Parliament<\/a>, from across 5 different political groupings, are calling for public procurement contracts to only be allowed to go to decent work employers. UNI Europa has sent an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-europa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Let_UE22_053_OpenLetter_PublicProcurement_150MEPs_EN.pdf\">open letter<\/a> to the European Commission, to relay this call and demand a fix to the public procurement directive, that is failing working people across Europe.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Public money should not be fueling a race to the bottom for working people. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to fix the Public Procurement Directive.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ProcuringDecentWork?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ProcuringDecentWork<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mPCkhakWMq\">pic.twitter.com\/mPCkhakWMq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 UNI Europa (@UNI_Europa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNI_Europa\/status\/1599720687224389632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 5, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Over \u20ac2 trillion is spent every year by public institutions for goods and services provided by private companies. This represents 14% of the European Union\u2019s GDP. Half of all these contracts are awarded based solely on price. This fuels a race to the bottom, allowing companies to undercut each other on workers\u2019 pay and conditions and incentivises them to suppress democracy at work.<\/p>\n<p>Workers\u2019 unions across Europe have been warning of the devastating effect EU legislation is having on collective bargaining. Many companies that have well established bargaining cultures and decent conditions are being priced out of accessing public contracts. They cannot compete with companies whose business model is based on poverty wages, long hours and union dodging.<\/p>\n<p>A broad coalition of MEPs are backing the workers and their unions towards a simple but effective solution. Instead of putting price above all else, all public contracts must go to companies which have collective bargaining agreements with their workers. For this, the EU\u2019s public procurement directive must be changed.<\/p>\n<p>It is not just workers\u2019 unions and elected parliamentarians calling for a change to the directive, but experts too.
