After more than ten months of unsatisfactory negotiations <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the sectoral <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collective agreement, Ver.di is once again calling for warning strikes among retail and wholesale <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">workers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ahead of the Easter holidays.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">28 March 2024,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">they will target<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> supermarket chains Schwarz Group, the third-largest food retailer in Germany<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> together with Kaufland and Lidl, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> considerable influence within the sectoral employers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> association HDE.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The owner of the Schwarz Group, Dieter Schwarz, is one of the richest Germans. He owes his success to the tireless efforts of his employees. It is a disgrace that an entrepreneur like him has allowed employees to wait more than ten months for a fair, legally secure and collectively agreed pay rise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> explains Silke Zimmer, member of Ver.di federal executive board responsible for commerce.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the last two weeks Edeka, Rewe, Kaufland and other retailers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> offered<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">wage increases after<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">mounting <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pressure <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the union\u2019s powerful<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> strik<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">es.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">But they are still<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> not <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">high enough <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to compensate for the loss of purchasing power from the price increases in 2022\/2023. Ver.di insists <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> demanding a collectively agreed salary increase of at least 2.50<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> euros <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">per hour for retail employees and a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">13 per cent <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increase in wages in wholesale and foreign trade, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">amounting to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at least 450 euros.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UNI Europa Regional Secretary Oliver Roethig commented: \u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that workers who ensure that essential products are sold to working families can barely make ends meet, while the big retailers continue to make large profits.
