Wednesday 26 September 2018

Today, social partners in the telecom sector, UNI Europa and ETNO, submitted a joint pledge to raise awareness about the importance of social partner involvement in the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition

The Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition, which UNI Europa and ETNO joined in February of this year, was first launched by the European Commission in December 2016 and aims at helping meet the high demand of digital skills across Europe. The Coalition brings together Member States, companies, social partners, NGOs and education providers.

The Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition is a key example of multi-stakeholder engagement. Therefore, UNI Europa and ETNO’s pledge to raise awareness about the importance of social partner involvement in the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition means that they will promote the Coalition’s objectives and initiatives in all events and relevant communications throughout their broad European networks, both at company and trade union level.

Representing both the employer and worker sides of the ICT industry, UNI Europa and ETNO are committed to the promotion of digital skills across their membership. Since 2014, UNI Europa and ETNO have been working together to highlight that, in order to efficiently address the digital skills gap, multi-stakeholder engagement and social dialogue are essential.

UNI Europa Regional Secretary, Oliver Roethig, commented: “It is our mission, as European social partners, to engage with the European Commission and other industry stakeholders to provide a future-proof framework for the upskilling and training of the ICT workforce. Digital skills are a key issue the future world of work. This pledge will go a long way to reinforce the role of social partners”.

ETNO Director General, Lise Fuhr stated: “Talking digitisation is not enough. Skills are crucial to ensure that all have the best job opportunities and that current employment is supported. This is why we are proud of strengthening our strategic collaboration with UNI Europa. Raising awareness on digital skills requires constant attention from all stakeholders and ETNO is committed to it along with its companies”.
