Workers protected and union role strengthened in updated agreement with the ECB

Wednesday 24 April 2019

UNI Europa and the other trade union federations representing Europe’s central banks workers have signed an updated agreement with outgoing ECB President Mario Draghi, guaranteeing a bigger role going forward for worker representatives in the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) social dialogue.

The signing ceremony took place at the ECB in Frankfurt on 3 April after a long bargaining process. Oliver Roethig, UNI Europa Regional Secretary, said “This agreement is key for Europe’s central banks workers, who urgently needed an updated transnational framework to allow them to do their jobs effectively and efficiently under good and secure working conditions”.

Mario Draghi underlined the importance of the new agreement and that the ECB is committed to ensuring that the voices of central bank workers and their representatives continue to be heard. This follows the creation of a specific ESCB social dialogue for banknotes, and Draghi proudly proclaimed that the Euro remains a tangible sign of European unity with substantial support from European citizens, despite naysayers wrongly predicting its downfall.
