Projects Monitoring and managing the use of AI in retail

This project will look at how to secure good working conditions by negotiating the algorithm.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an integral part of the workplace, including in the commerce sector, with companies adopting innovations based on AI technology at increasing speed. As their impact on working conditions is growing – from scheduling shifts to surveillance – the voice of unions needs to be heard.

In the effort of supporting trade unions in this challenge, we have launched this two-year project “Monitoring and Managing the use of AI in the retail sector” (MMAI).

The overall objectives of this project are:

  • strenghtening capacity of unions, workers representatives and health & safety representatives in responding to the accelerating use of AI;
  • supporting unions across Europe in securing good working conditions by negotiating the use of algorithms;
  • raising awareness;
  • providing training and practical tools (a toolkit and videos).

The project will also:

  • help to grow representativeness;
  • strengthen social dialogue and collective bargaining;
  • negotiate agreements between social partners.

The project focuses on 4 target countries:

  1. France (CFDT Services);
  2. Hungary (KASZ);
  3. Spain (CCOO Servicios);
  4. Sweden (Handels and Unionen)
