UNI Europa stands in solidarity with Czech national strike

Today, 27 November 2023, the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions (ČMKOS) has called a national day of strikes and protests all around the country – one of the biggest mobilisation in the last 30 years. Czech trade unions demand an end to the deterioration of the living standards of workers and their families, the government measures on pensions, energy price increases, the unacceptable decline in real wages and salaries and the impact of further austerity measures.

UNI Europa Regional Secretary Oliver Roethig express his solidarity on behalf of UNI Europa:

“I write to express my unwavering support and solidarity with your day of action today, 27 November 2023, against the austerity policies that continue to burden the workers of your country. We have time and again witnessed across Europe that austerity measures create only uncertainty and economic instability for workers, their families, and communities. Your decision to take a stand through a day of protests sends a powerful message to those in power – the relentless pursuit of austerity cannot come at the expense of hardworking individuals and their futures.

Please know that as a voice echoing your cause, UNI Europa stands firmly alongside you in demanding that our policymakers recognize the detrimental impact of austerity on both individuals and the broader socio-economic fabric. It is incumbent upon those in positions of power to prioritise the well-being and dignity of their citizens over short-term fiscal gains. May your day of action be a resounding success. We will be proud to stand with you in the framework of the European campaign “On the Road to Fair Deal for Workers” on the streets of Brussels next 12 December where we want to echo at European level the same message that you will be sending today in your national Day of Protests: it is time to turn the page on a failed recipe and build a better future for working people and their families.

On behalf of services workers’ unions, we extend our full solidarity.”
