UNI Europa calls for fair postal sector at Belgian EU Presidency conference

On 11 April, UNI Europa Post & Logistics represented postal workers and their trade unions at the High-Level Post and E-Commerce Conference organised by the Belgian EU Presidency. Chaired by Petra De Sutter, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration, Public Enterprises, Telecommunication and the Postal Services, the conference opened up a discussion on future landscape of the postal sector and last-mile parcel delivery in the EU.

In the context of the revision of the Postal Services Directive and the significant transformations in the sector, the event brought together national and international stakeholders and enabled an in-depth discussion on the need for a new Postal Services Directive that prioritizes both environmental and social sustainability.

Several distinguished speakers, including European Commissioner Thierry Breton and Universal Postal Union Director-General Masahiko Metoki shared their insights on the future of the sector. Dimitris Theodorakis, Director of UNI Europa Post & Logistics, addressed the revision of the Postal Services Directive, emphasising the need to establish a regulatory framework that ensures a level playing field for all actors involved in the postal value chain.

The framework should uphold fair practices in terms of employment conditions, environmental performance, and quality of service. Additionally, the revision of the Postal Services Directive needs to align with the reporting requirements outlined in the EU Green Deal and the forthcoming Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.

As part of the renewed UNI Europa Save Our Post! Campaign, postal trade unions joined forces ahead of the upcoming European elections, issuing a pledge with five key priorities for the Postal Services Directive revision.
